The 7 Factors That Affect Printing Color Quality (And How to Control Them)

One of the most frustrating moments in printing is receiving a final product that doesn’t match the sample. You approved the proof, but the box looks “dull,” or the logo looks “too warm.” Why does this happen?

Color is not magic; it is physics. However, it is influenced by many variables, from the paper stock to the light bulb in your office. Based on our experience at Kore Create, here are the 7 critical factors that influence printing color quality—and what you can do to ensure consistency.

1. Consistency of Observation

Color is subjective. To ensure consistency, the client and the printer must look at the proof under the same conditions.

  • The Fix: Always sign off on color proofs under standard D50 (5000K) lighting or natural daylight. Do not approve color in a dimly lit room or under yellow restaurant lights.

2. Lighting & Metamerism

Have you ever matched two socks in the bedroom, only to find they are different shades of black when you step outside? This is called Metamerism.

  • The Science: Two colors may look identical under one light source (like a fluorescent office light) but completely different under another (like sunlight).
  • The Fix: We use standard light booths to check color. Trust the spectral data, not just your eyes.

3. The Viewing Environment

The colors surrounding the print affect how your eye perceives the print itself. This is called “Simultaneous Contrast.” If you hold a red print against a green wall, the red will appear different than if held against a white wall.

  • The Fix: Always view proofs on a neutral grey background.

4. Paper Stock (Substrate)

You cannot print the same color on two different papers and expect them to look the same.

  • Whiteness: Paper acts as the “light source” reflecting through the ink. A yellower paper will make blue ink look greenish.
  • Absorption: Uncoated paper absorbs ink, making colors darker and less saturated. Coated paper keeps ink on the surface for more vibrancy.

5. Spot Colors vs. Process Colors

Spot Colors (Pantone) use a specific pre-mixed ink (like mixing paint in a bucket). Process Colors (CMYK) use dots of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black to trick the eye.

  • The Reality: Some bright Pantone colors (like neon orange) simply cannot be reproduced using CMYK.
  • The Fix: If brand accuracy is critical, pay extra for a “Spot Color” plate.

6. RGB to CMYK Conversion

Your computer screen (RGB) creates color with light. The printing press (CMYK) creates color with ink.

  • The Problem: The screen can display millions of colors (wide gamut). The press has a limited range. When converting, software uses algorithms (like GCR or UCR) to replace colored ink with black ink to create shadows.

7. Communication (The Language of Color)

Words like “make it pop,” “too warm,” or “a bit muddy” are vague.

  • The Fix: Use numbers. Use Pantone codes. Or, provide a physical sample (a “target”) that you want us to match.

Bonus: Understanding CMYK (The 4-Color Process)

Modern offset printing is based on the subtractive color model using Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y), and Black (K).

While C, M, and Y can theoretically mix to create black, in reality, they create a muddy brown. That is why we add “K” (Key/Black) to add depth, contrast, and crisp text. On the press, these four inks are printed as tiny dots at different angles. Your eye blends them together to see a full-color image.
